Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley (6 Şubat 1945 - 11 Mayıs 1981), Jamaikalı reggae sanatçısı. Bob Marley, 130'un üzerinde plağı, her biri dillere destan olmuş yüzlerce şarkısı bulunan bir reggae efsanesi olarak kabul edilir.

5 yaşındayken, annesi Kingston'a taşınmaya karar vermiş ve orada Bob ve ailesi, yaşamı boyunca Bob'un en iyi arkadaşlarından biri olan Bunny Livingston ve ailesi ile birlikte yaşamışlar. Bob ve Bunny, o yıllardan beri müzik ile uğraşmışlar.

Bob Marley, reggae müziğinin sadece Jamaika sınırları içerisinde kalmasından ziyade, onu bütün dünyaya duyuran en önemli isimlerden biridir. Büyük bir kesim tarafından bu tür müziğin kralı olarak ifade edilen Bob Marley, söz yazarı, şarkıcı ve gitaristtir. Profesyonel anlamda müziğe The Wailers grubu ile başlamıştır. The Wailers, Peter Tosh ve Bunny Livingston'dan oluşuyordu ki, bu isimlerde daha sonradan Bob Marley gibi solo kariyer çalışmalarına devam ettiler. İlk hitleri "Simmer Down" olmuştu.

Bob, The Wailers'dan ayrıldıktan sonra, üç kadın reggae sanatçısının oluşturduğu The I-Threes adlı gruba müzikal alanda yardım etti. Topluluğun elemanlarından Juddy Mowatt, tecrübeli sanatçı için şu ifadeyi kullanmıştı; "Bob Marley’in şarkı sözü ve müzik altyapısı öylesine gelişmiş ki, kendisi bir müzik ansiklopedisi gibi"

Bu ünlü Jameikalı söz yazarı, sadece kendisi ile değil bu grubu ile de, "ada müziğinin" evrensel bir boyut kazanmasını sağladı. Şarkılarında politik ancak basit bir içerik vardı.

"Catch A Fire"ı 1972 yılında yayımladı. Bu çalışmayı; 1973 çıkışlı "Burnin’", 1975'te kaydedilen "Natty Dread" ve 1975 tarihli "Live" albümleri izledi. İngiltere, Almanya gibi önemli Avrupa ülkelerinde de hatrı sayılır bir dinleyici kitlesine sahip oldu. Bu sayede Avrupa'da özellikle o yıllar için büyük önem taşıyan konserler verdi.

En popüler şarkılarından biri olan "Get Up, Stand Up", sosyal karmaşayı konu edinir. " No , Woman No Cry" gibi politik olmayan içerikte parçaları da vardır.

Birleşmiş Milletler "Barış Madalyası", 1978'de Afrika insanına yapılan insancıl yardımlara şarkılarıyla destek olduğu için, Bob Marley'e verilmiştir. Ve bu ödülü aldığı sene insancıl yardım amacıyla Jamaika'da konsere çıkmıştır. Müzisyenliğiyle uluslararası alanda kabul gören Marley, insani yönüyle de büyük takdir kazanmıştır.

Yaptığı "I Shot The Sheriff" ve "Get Up, Stand Up" gibi şarkılar ünlü sanatçı Eric Clapton tarafından yıllar sonra yeniden düzenlenmiştir.

Bob Marley çok az kişinin inandığı Rastafarianizm dinine mensuptur. Bu din eski Etiyopya topraklarından çıkmıştır ki saçını "Rasta" yapmasının nedeni de dini inancıdır. "Rasta" saç stili bu gün moda olarak kullanılsa da Bob Marley buna karşıdır .Bu saç stilinin gerçek adı Dreadlock olmasına rağmen Rasta olarak bilinmektedir.

1977 yılında futbol oynarken ayak başparmağında açılan bir yaradan dolayı deri kanseri (melanoma) olduğu ortaya çıktı. Parmağının kesilmesini istemedi. Çünkü Rastafarianizm inancında mezara tek parça halinde girilmek istenir. 1981 yılında ağırlaşan Marley, son günlerini yaşamak için Almanya'dan ülkesi Jamaika'ya uçakla dönerken durumu kritikleşti. Uçağı acil tıbbi yardım için Miami'ye iniş yaptı. Miami, Florida'daki Cedars of Lebanon Hastanesinde, 11 Mayıs 1981 sabahı 36 yaşında hayatını kaybetti. Son sözleri oğlu Ziggy'ye "Para hayatı satın alamaz" oldu.[1] Ölmeden önceki ay kendisine ülke kültürüne katkılarından dolayı Jamaika'nın en büyük ödülü Merit verilmişti ama almaya ömrü yetmedi.

Dini

Bob Marley reggae tarzının kilit noktası olan Rastafari hareketindendi. Marley Rastafari'nin lideri haline geldi ve Reggae'yi Jamaica'dan çıkartıp uluslararası üne sahip bir müzik haline getirdi. Biyografilerine göre, Twelve Tribes Mansion'na bağlıydı. O "Tribe of Joseph" diye bilinen Rastafari mezhebindendi, çünkü şubatta doğmuştu. (rastafarinin 12 mezhebi 12 ayrı ayda doğanlar tarafından oluşur).Gerçek Rastalar (Rasta = Rasta dinine inanan insan) Ital adını verdikleri inanç ile et yemezler. Yani Bob Marley vejetaryen idi.[2] Marley bunu kendi notlarında belirtmiştir. Marley Etiyopya Ortodoks Hıristiyan Kilisesi tarafından 4 Kasım 1980'de Kingston, Jamaika'da vaftiz edildi.[3][4]
