The Way They Live 19. yüzyıl Amerikan gerçekçiliğinin önemli temsilcilerinden ressam ve akademisyen [2] Thomas Anshutz'un en tanınmış eserlerinden biridir.[3] 1879 yılında Anshutz The Way They Live adlı eserinde afrika kökenli bir anneyle iki çocuğunun zorlu yaşamını gerçekçi bir ifadeyle resmetmiştir.[4]
