Epidermis (zooloji)

Zoolojide epidermis süngerlerden daha karmaşık olan Eumetazoa hayvanların gövdesini kaplayan epitel (hücre tabakası) için kullanılan terimdir.[1][2] Eumetazoalarda gastrodermis adı verilen benzer bir epitel ile kaplı olan ve ağızda epidermis ile sınır oluşturan bir boşluk bulunur.[2]

Süngerlerin epitelleri yoktur dolayısıyla da epidermis ve gastrodermisleri de yoktur.[2] Daha karmaşık omurgasızların epidermisi bir tabaka daha kalındır ve hücresel olmayan bir ölü deri tabakasıyla korunur. Daha gelişmiş omurgalıların ise epidermisleri birkaç tabakadan oluşur ve dış katmanları keratin ile güçlendirilmiştir.[3]
